Executive summary
Welcome to the 2024 edition of our Careers and Hiring Guide, featuring the latest insights and trends from the AWS community worldwide.
Every year, we explore the issues that matter most to AWS professionals to help you map out a successful career and ensure you get maximum value from this leading cloud computing platform.
Whether you’re eyeing up your dream job, looking to shine in your current role or seeking fresh talent to spearhead innovation in your team, we have all the insights you need to achieve your goals.
We aggregate our findings from two primary sources: self-reported data from an online survey of AWS professionals, customers, and partners, and statistical analysis of vacancies and placements made by Jefferson Frank. This information allows us to profile developments and sentiments across the industry, including market movement of salaries.
According to our survey, 70% of hiring managers believe there is an IT skills gap in the AWS community, with 45% of those respondents highlighting the time it takes to find talent as their main challenge to tackling this divide.
Honing in on skills development, 82% of professionals believe that certifications make you a more valuable candidate, yet only 58% hold one (down from 59% in our last survey). The tangible impact of certs shouldn’t be underestimated either, with those reporting a pay rise post-certification averaging a sizeable increase of 23%.
And employers, take note, as a lack of wage growth is the top reason for an employee seeking a job elsewhere.
Salary aside though, candidates are also looking for competitive benefits, with a generous amount of time off and home working topping our poll as the most enticing perks.
Our study also spotlighted equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and found that only 59% of employees believe their employer provides equal pay for equal work. And with just 66% of businesses investing resources into EDI initiatives—a drop of 3% since our last report—progress appears to be stagnating.
We’ll dig into these trends and much more in the rest of this guide, so please read our latest findings, commentary, and tips at your leisure.
A big thank you to everyone who took part in our survey; your insights make this publication possible. Look out for your chance to take part again next year!
Until then,
Zoë

About this guide
This report is based on over 69,000 data points, including self-reported survey information from 635 AWS professionals worldwide between April and August 2023. Respondents span a range of industries, come from diverse personal and professional backgrounds, and include a mix of professionals and hiring managers.
We’ve validated every survey response using robust statistical analysis and automated data validation rules to be included in the final results. Any data that didn’t pass our validation rules and statistical analysis or was deemed questionable, incomplete, or duplicate was removed so that the results published are meaningful and accurate.
- Not all percentages add up to 100% because some questions have multiple-choice answers
- Answers are rounded for single-choice questions, so not all responses will total 100%
- Findings based on a small sample of results (i.e., under 5%) should be taken as indicative only
- For questions that asked for an open (qualitative) response, there may be some overlap in the quotes used to identify the themes, with quotes illustrating more than one theme
- Themes identified when grouping qualitative responses are displayed in no particular order of importance and are purely representative of the answers given
- Respondent views are their own and do not reflect the views of Jefferson Frank and its employees
